Roughcut’s coming
So in my work for Sony Australia, I am lucky enough to be managing the Roughcut initiative this year.
Roughcut is a free filmmaking seminar Sony hosts in association with Sony Tropfest – the world’s largest short film festival and it’s a totally fab event, even though I do say myself.
Roughcut was born back in 2004 when Kelly (who is freelancing with me at Duke now) and I were working together at PR agency Stenmark. We recommended a seminar style event to Sony to allow filmmakers to learn more about the essentials of short filmmaking and find out more about the cameras and accessories Sony has – especially the HD models. Roughcut was born.
With high definition consumer and prosumer cameras available now at a fraction of the cost of the professional versions and offering clear 1080i HDV images that look totally sublime. Roughcut is where 400 filmmakers will learn about the cameras and HD as well as other essential filmmaking skills.
It was also heavily oversubscribed so this year we are extending Roughcut online more and hope to be able to make the sessions available to a wider audiences after the event as well as providing a video podcast of each speaker.
This year we’ve got cinematographer Piet de Vries who returns after appearing at Roughcut in 2004. John Colette (editing), James Nowiczewski (sound) and Billy Marshall Stoneking (scripwriting) are also back following their successful sessions last year. We’ll also hear from Sony Tropfest winners Alex Weinress and Rob Carlton.

It’s gonna be a cracker. It’s on the 11th November in Central Sydney. We’ve got people coming wanting to come from each state except the NT and even some people wanting to come from India and the US.
Behind the scenes pix to follow.

You’ll doubtless be pleased to know, Rubes, I toted my SONY ROUGHCUT bag from last year all around Italy, logo facing outward of course. It has been everywhere from the Amalfi Coast to the Venetian canals. As for the event itself, I hope Saturday is as successful this year as it was last – under your able steerage, how could it fail to be anything but?!
